How not to buy counterfeit: Tips experts on the choice of alcohol

Non-profit organization Roskachestvo completed a study of 47 brandy brands that each of us can find on the shelves of Russian stores. The products under investigation are mainly Russian-made, but several foreign products are also presented: from France, Armenia, Moldova and Georgia. The price category of the studied products is the most affordable: from 371 to 1659 rubles (the price is indicated for 0.5 l). According to the experts of Roskachestvo, it was this price segment that prompted them to be popular and high in sales of such cognac.

As a result, it turned out that five manufacturers used forbidden artificial flavors, which resulted in partial withdrawal of their goods from stores. Cognac of these brands was sold at a price of up to 512 rubles.

Even in 15 products alcohol of non-grape origin was found, and therefore this product cannot be called brandy in accordance with federal law. According to experts, although the consumption of such a product is not dangerous to health, it can only claim the title of “alcoholic drink.” You can find out which brands of cognac were included in the Roskachestvo “black list” here.

In addition to fakes, experts have identified and five best in this price category of goods. These are the French Hennessy, Courvoisier, Martell and Remy Martin (they are also the most expensive) and, quite surprisingly, the Crimean “Bakhchisarai”. And the latter can claim the Russian Quality Mark, despite the fact that it is twice cheaper than the French.

What is real cognac, and is it in Russia? How to choose high-quality alcohol, and what alcohol products are the most difficult to fake? Is it possible to be poisoned by the fact that in beautiful bottles it stands on the shelves of supermarkets? The experts answered us these questions.

Price is a quality indicator

No matter how simple this thought may sound, but, according to the chairman of the Union of Cognac Producers Irina Bushina, the main reference point for the cognac buyer can only be the price:

It seems to me that the price, which can unambiguously protect and assist in the selection of brandy, is price. Good cognac, genuine cognac simply cannot be cheap. ”

The high cost of this product, according to the interlocutor of “Constantinople”, is quite natural. After all, the process of preparing raw materials for high-quality brandy takes more than one year: first you need to grow grapes, then make wine, then withstand it for at least three years in an oak barrel. According to the expert, the minimum price for a bottle of such brandy will be about 500 rubles per 0.5 liter at retail.

Label better not to trust

At the same time, it is unreliable to be guided when choosing brandy on a label, that is, on the information that is indicated on it. Such an opinion was expressed by Vadim Drobiz, director of the center for research of the federal and regional alcohol markets TsIFRRA in an interview with Tsargrad:
Nowhere is it written on cognac that it is falsified. Everywhere it is indicated that this is a real cognac. That is, the consumer is misleading. In general, never, exploring the label of any alcoholic beverages, you do not determine that it is a fake. ”

The member of the Russian Sommelier Association Erkin Tuzmukhamedov also spoke about the same. According to him, part of the alcoholic beverages produced under the guise of, for example, brandy or whiskey, is, in fact, tinted vodka.
